L'hétérodoxie, une « folie » acceptable ? Remarques sur l'Apologia pro Serveto Villanovano

L’article propose une réflexion sur les seuils de l’acceptable concernant la défense de la « tolérance » religieuse au xvie siècle, autour de la condamnation de Michel Servet à Genève. Conçu en deux parties, il contraste d’abord les stratégies adoptées, dans une finalité similaire, par David Joris, Sébastien Castellion et Guillaume Postel, avant d’analyser certains aspects de l'Apologia pro Serveto Villanovano de ce dernier. Une réévaluation des éléments supposés témoigner de la « folie » de Postel y est proposée : il s’agirait d’une stratégie destinée à éluder la censure, en faisant passer pour absurdes des propositions philosophiques périlleuses dont la véritable portée n’échapperait pas aux lecteurs avisés.

The paper proposes a reflexion on the threshold of what might be acceptable in the defense of
religious „toleration“ in the 16th century, taking the example of the trial of Michael Servetus in Geneva. In the first part, similar strategies of defense developed by David Joris, Sebastian Castellio and Guillaume Postel are compared, whereafter in the second part a more specific analysis of certain aspects of the Apologia pro Serveto Villanovano from the latter is proposed. The aim is a re-evaluation of some elements of the supposed madness of Postel, suggesting that they are part of a strategy to delude censorship, making dangerous philosophic thoughts acceptable for the public and understandable for the initiated.
